I got it! It’s displacement.

I was having a very hard time understanding the giant popularity of action packed Killer Video Games and the ongoing abundance of vampire and horror films. Particularly since the reality of the global conditions are dire, scary, horrific.

In psychology, displacement is an unconscious defense mechanism whereby the mind redirects affects from an object felt to be dangerous or unacceptable to an object felt to be safe or acceptable.[1] For instance, some people punch cushions when they are angry at friends; a college student may snap at his or her roommate when upset about an exam grade.
Displacement operates in the mind unconsciously and involves emotions, ideas, or wishes being transferred from their original object to a more acceptable substitute. It is most often used to allay anxiety. From Wikipedia.

What could be more dangerous and unacceptable than the demise of humanity? The loss or a job or income? The decline and fall of American Pre-eminence in the world? Maybe the loss of white racial superiority in the US? Absolutely understandable for people to escape into fantasy games where they are all powerful and can kill and destroy by whim. And there are those not into technological escapes but chemical. Drugs and alcohol are abundant and regularly abused. (Not to mention mucking up tranquility across the border.) Reality can be discomforting.

Sorry.

I think that the only way we can get out alive (well in the short term, life after all is terminal) is being alert and personally responsible. Your wisdom, your clear faculties, your creativity and your loving engagement are urgently needed.

I am very much influenced and mobilized by Dr. Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer in Residence with National Geographic Society, world renown diver and author.

I am not willing to give up on you and the rest of humanity.

I am focusing now on my home community: San Diego. I’ve begun a program called Vision2020 SanDiego, to alert and mobilize this community to evolve to a thriving environment in spite of the multiplicity of hazards we humans have created.

I invite you to work with me toward our global future. Ideas, referrals, donations, even well wishes are valued. Together we can build a future we can look forward to, not fear.
